My last blog didn't last very long for a number of reasons, so I hesitated pimping out my new one here. But it's been almost a month since I opened it and it's going stronger than ever. I love blogging my cooking and things I do around the house, and it's given me more ideas for projects in the near future.

So if you're wondering where my project and recipe posts went, they're here: fromthecheddars.blogspot.com

And to entice you, a picture of the Holy Cow Cake I made last weekend:

Bookmark it if you're interested, I have a lot of awesome stuff planned!

This episode was done in a Ken Burns-style documentary, with the panning-still-photos effect to give the illusion of action. There was a voiceover from Keith David, which is a really huge deal (for Abed, because he's from The Cape, and for me because he played Gus's dad on Psych) and talking heads, it's brilliant. It's so brilliant that when I sat my mum down to watch it, she promptly fell asleep, indicating that the documentary format was a success!

So voiceovers will be in blue because there are a lot of them and it'll be easier to distinguish from the dialogue. For the record, this has to be one of my favorite theme episodes this show has ever done. (Edit: That was typed before the 16-bit episode had aired, so it was true at the time, but it has since changed.)

I can't be 100% sure, but I think I may have transcribed ALL of Keith David's lines. So. Be ready for that. Also, GIFS!

We got the bad news late Friday night that Dan Harmon is no longer Community's showrunner. It was an end to a perfectly dismal week for our fandom, but as I'd just gotten done watching Thor, and being a person who likes to cheer other people up, I wasn't content to just cry. Instead, I accidentally started up a Twitter meme and created a hashtag that ended up trending for almost an hour in the United States.

This is how it all went down:

More amazingness under the cut. )

It's been a tragic night but this made everything a little bit better. Go check out my Twitter to see all of the awesome RTs of other people's "This must be!" contributions.

It's been a while since I've done one of these, but it's long overdue. If you can't see this entry, I have cut you from my friends list. It's not anything personal--either we haven't spoken in a while, we speak more frequently in places other than LiveJournal, or I don't feel we know each other well enough for me to feel comfortable. This is not intended to hurt anyone's feelings, but to simplify my life.

*tap tap* Is this thing on? Hello? (Is it me you're looking for?)

SO MUCH has happened since I last picspammed. I lost my mother-in-law to leukemia. I got married, TWICE. My brother was deployed to Kuwait. And while all of those things are life-changing and Huge Moments, the real reason the picspams stopped was that my old laptop, HP's slow, clunky, white-cased DV6000, purchased in September of 2007 with a student loan that gives me ulcers, DIED ON MY BIRTHDAY. The last decent, generous thing my father-in-law did before turning into a despicable human being was to buy me a new laptop as a combination birthday-and-Christmas present.

So I am picspamming from an alien land--everything is faster, wider-screened, smaller, and my legs are not burning from the bottom of my laptop's efforts to keep up with my shenanigans. (I'm still raging at that stupid thing, as it died literally 12 hours too early; I'd just gotten a 2-terabyte external harddrive for my birthday to backup all my work, WOE.) So bear with me, as I'm rusty and these things are going to be weird and different from now on. If I keep going. I don't know. We'll take it on an episode-by-episode basis.

Oh and I'm skipping all the way up to 3.13 because that's how we roll.

When we got back from our honeymoon, I expected a signed Modern Warfare script from Neil Goldman to be in my mailbox. Tragically, it was not. After 3 days of me being sad every time he checked the mail, my husband, wanting to "fix" it, said, "I'll write you a script instead."

This is the result. He's never written anything outside of term papers, much less any sort of fanfiction or fiction at all. He did not ask me for help (not even for people's last names) and besides getting to preview the cold open, I didn't get to read it until it was finished. I am pretty amazed at how awesome it is. For the record, he thinks it's rubbish, along with everything else he writes.

So, without futher ado!

Title: (Comm)Unity
Songs: "Unity" by Shinedown
Fandom: Community
Spoilers: through 3.15 "Origins of Vampire Mythology"
Character/Pairing: ensemble
Summary: Laughter, tears, loneliness, friendship, love, fights, blanket forts, paintball, and oh yeah, Dean Pelton winking from the moon. There is also a not-so-subtle "Gravity" shout-out in there.
Links: YouTube

A/N: 1) The greatest thing about this video is that my cousin's band is getting introduced to a whole new group of people. 2) Ensemble videos are really hard to pull off but are ultimately more rewarding if you do the work. 3) Dan Harmon tweeted this one, calling me the "Betsy Ross of Community vids." 4) Andddd it took me about 20 non-consecutive hours (about 8 days) to get this one done.

Also, I wish more people would comment on the fact that I used a clip of Britta picking her nose for the line "to reach all these places."

Edit: Oh and people who don't like Shinedown need not comment. You can kindly keep that info to yourself. This is the only band I'll ever be obstinate about.

The night after we were done repainting the guest bathroom (I still breathe a happy sigh when I go in there) Hubs said he wanted to tackle the disgusting patch of mulch in our back yard:

It's more fun than it sounds, honestly. )

I never ask you guys to buy anything, because I don't have an Etsy store or any trade-able talents, but this is MUSIC and we download that stuff all the time! So please, if you're looking for new stuff to listen to, or you're bored, or you often think "I wish she'd stop talking about that damn drummer cousin of hers!" then please download this album!!!

I got to listen to the raw tracks during the first week of January and I have been counting down the days to the album release just to get my digital hands on "I'll Follow You," which nearly brought me to tears when I first heard it. If I had to recommend one song off of that one time I got to listen, I'd recommend that one.

The entire album is available on iTunes now, physical copies will be released on Tuesday. Let me know what you guys think!

Despite being a movie freak (from 2003-2009, most of my disposable income was spent on movie tickets!) I had never actually been to a midnight showing of a movie. Through all the Lord of the Rings movies, the Harry Potters, even the Pirates of the Caribbeans, for various reasons I hadn't made it to a midnight showing. Finally, with "The Hunger Games," I had my opportunity!

... I think maybe the midnight experience is more fun when you're a teenager? Let's just say, there was a LOT of shrieking.

But the movie itself? Phenomenal.

I want to start out with the only complaint I had, because it's kind of a pet peeve of mine, and it was compounded by the fact that we were sitting in the very front, basically looking UP at the screen. Probably about 25-35% of the movie is shot in the "handheld" style. You know the one. Shaky camera, awkward close-ups, action shots where it looks like a bunch of blurs. The first fifteen or twenty minutes were exclusively shot this way, because they wanted District 12 to feel wild and unpredictable I'm sure, but it lent itself to dizzying and often unflattering shots of Katniss, Gale, and Prim, and was just frustrating for us.

The scene where the tributes start the Hunger Games, where they run off the platforms toward the cornucopia? Also shot in the same way. Katniss was nearly killed and then ran right into Foxface in the woods, but we had to rely on dialogue and the occasional still shot to glean that.

The later scene where she and Clove wrestle at the "feast" was even more frustrating, because both girls are brunette with similar complexions. There was about two minutes of shaky flipping and grunting until it was revealed that Clove had pinned down Katniss. And then at the end, when Peeta and Katniss encounter Cato on the cornucopia, was shot in the same way up until Cato caught Peeta.

It's grating because you can't commit to a style for a certain "feeling" and then use that same style intermittently through the movie. I understand using it for District 12 (every time they went back to it, and even the shots in 11, it was in the handheld style) but there were times when steadier shots and even overview shots would've made a big difference. The obvious example is when they're all running from their platforms--an overhead/birds-eye shot of the tributes scattering in all directions through the clearing would've been GORGEOUS. The Katniss-Peeta-Cato fight on the cornucopia would've benefited greatly from a few more overhead shots.

But chances are, I'm going back sometimes this week to see it again, and I'm gonna make sure I sit up further in the theater. Maybe it's not so bad when you're not looking straight up at it.

The other thing that was weird to me was the strange scoring, or... lack thereof. The gorgeous four-note trill between Katniss and Rue doesn't make up for the long stretches of movie where the music was conspicuously absent. The most notable was during the Reaping, the entire thing is unscored. Effie titters and simpers and announces Prim, there is a solid minute of reaction shots, then Katniss volunteers. Not one note of music! Normally this isn't stuff I notice until, like, the four hundredth viewing of a movie, but that scene seemed so strange without music to heighten the emotion. It was probably a stylistic decision on the part of the director (I have a hard time believing a composer worth their salt would've left that scene silent) but it didn't sit well with me.

Other than that, I have to say, this movie was probably my favorite book-to-movie adaptation of the recent YA crop we've been dealt. Yes, even including the Harry Potters. Part of that is because the book was basically written like a movie in the first place, but it was also properly paced, well-acted, well-written, and handled the overall theme of the book effectively. The changes they made (such as the origination of the Mockingjay pin) were negligible.

Highlights!

+ Cinna was just as awesome as I'd hoped he'd be. Lenny Kravitz played him wonderfully, properly understated and calculating.

+ Our entire theater awwwwwwwed at Rue every time she was onscreen, and for good reason--that girl is GOOD. She is adorable and had better chemistry with Jennifer than the girl who played Prim. There was not a dry eye in the theater when she died, and that scene was done beautifully as well. I had tears running down my face for probably ten minutes, what with the singing, the flowers, the salute to the district that Katniss did, and the resulting riots. THAT is an Oscar-worthy sequence.

+ I had a strong attachment to Thresh when I read the book, and my attachment to him was even stronger in the movie. I liked his soft spot for Rue, and the look he gave Katniss when he let her have a break. When the cannon went off for him, the whole theater lamented.

+ The director/editor made the curious decision to show reaction shots from Gale every time there was a romantic scene between Katniss and Peeta. I'm not sure if they were going for rampant laughter, but the theater burst out laughing every time Liam Hemsworth attempted to emote his jealousy or... whatever it was Gale was supposed to be feeling.

+ The costuming for the Capitol was very well done (Tim Burton would've had a field day but the costume department showed an amazing sense of restraint even among the luxuries) and the simple gold eyeshadow on Cinna contrasted beautifully with Effie's over-the-top outfits. I also really liked Haymitch's costuming. I was less enthused with the weird 1950's vibe they went for in the Districts, but I see what they were trying to do. And the only misstep they had was that horrible pale yellow dress Katniss wore at the end of the movie.

+ Haymitch! I was one of those people who thought Hugh Laurie would've made the perfect Haymitch, but Woody Harrelson did an amazing job! My favorite role of his since he played Tallahassee in Zombieland, no lie.

+ Elizabeth Banks has always been grating to me, but she seemed to have SO MUCH FUN playing Effie that it was infectious. She delivered her lines with perfect aplomb, properly overreacted, and was seemingly oblivious just like in the book. It was delightful to watch her, she added some much needed comic relief.

+ I am glad to say that all of my reservations about Jennifer Lawrence's acting are gone. She WAS really bad in X-Men: First Class but she did Katniss justice. I still don't get why they couldn't cast a skinnier girl. She's not fat, but Katniss was supposed to be borderline malnourished.

+ I also liked Josh Hutcherson as Peeta. HIS FACE. (Hubs leaned over halfway through the movie and said "He looks like Mr. Incredible." Now I can't unsee it.)

I haven't decided whether I'm going to see Catching Fire. I'm curious about how they'll depict the new arena, with the moving island, blistering gas, and jabberjays, but I'm less enthused about the character assassination Collins began to employ in that book. SIGH. I'll wait and see. I will NOT be seeing Mockingjay, though.
